How you use your patio during the winter months really depends on where you live. If you live in the southern United States, you can really get a lot of use since the winters are usually very mild. If you live in areas that get some snow, you can still get a lot of use out of your patio. The trick is to figure out how to make the best use of your outdoor space.

The key to using your patio during the winter is taking steps during the warmer months to prepare you patio for the colder months. One of the best ways out there to make use of your patio when it is cold and snowy is to install some kind of enclosure. By installing a wind break, you can dramatically change the way you can use you patio in the winter, and plus it helps to make your condo more secure. The extremely cold days in the winter are usually magnified by very chilly winds, so eliminating the wind in your first step to using your patio.

Building an Enclosure

There are several options for enclosing your patio and making it more habitable when the temperatures drop. If you still want to enjoy the outdoors in the fall, spring and summer you could make it a screened in porch. This will help you keep the majority of the snow off of your patio and allow you to make good use of a heater. Finding the right heater for your space is the best way to make you patio pleasant in the winter.

If you do not want any sort of walls obscuring your views, you could install an awning or better yet a retractable awning. This would allow you to keep most of the snow off of your patio and let you use it much more. Using a light weight heater that you can move on and off of the patio when you are not using it will make it much more comfortable.

You could make your patio into what is called a three season room, which would basically make it an extension of your home. By cleverly using a heater or two you can turn this into a four season room. If you install walls and a roof, you will limit the amount of sun your patio receives in the summer. There is a tradeoff to be made when considering a three season room.

What Kind of Heater

There are special considerations when think about what type of heater to use. What type of space you create has a big effect on what type of heater you should use. If you have a large outdoor space to heat you should be able to use a gas heater. These can produce a lot of heat and come in many sizes for whatever your need may be. You should be aware that these kinds of heaters use propane or natural gas and could create problems depending on how enclosed your patio is.

If you have a smaller space and do not want the hassles that can come with gas heaters, you could always use an electric one on your patio in the winter. These are made to plug into standard electrical sockets and are very easy and safer to operate. Electric heaters usually do not put out a tremendous amount of heat so you may need a few to really make it toasty. You do want to be careful not to overload and electrical sockets with too many heaters though. You also always want to be sure you turn off any heater when it is not in use.
