Tips for Hiring a Green Contractor

If you are serious about helping the environment and doing your part, you do not want to be a part of the problem. Since there are so many people that care about helping the environment, there are many different contractors that have been taking advantage of this fact. Some of these contractors have decided that they want to take on green practices, and others have just decided that they will make people think they are green.

Hiring a Real Green Contractor

You want to make sure that you are not tricked by a contractor that claims he will be practicing greens ways to clean ovens, but really he is just keeping his cleaning products out of your sight. Be very careful since there are plenty of people that love to claim they are green and then go on performing in a very not green manner. Since there are so many people that do this, you may be very skeptical whenever you hire someone.

Before you do anything, you need to check their contractor license. You can learn whether they are operating within proper state requirements through this investigation. If they are not even operating under state requirements, it is very doubtful that they are going the extra step and try to practice green techniques.

Another thing that you will learn through checking their contractor license is whether or not they have consumer complaints or summons that they are having to take care of. If there are many consumer complaints you may want to consider finding someone else to do the work that you need done. If there have only been a couple of complaints throughout the year, that is understandable. If there are multiple complaints, it would be unwise to try out this company.

You should also check to see if the Better Business Bureau has any information on this company. If they have a low rating with the BBB, once you again, you may be on the path to trouble if you do not take heed. Do some additional research if you like, but the BBB is usually a pretty good way to tell whether a business is good or questionable.

Going in Depth

It is important that you do not stop at the surface. Once you have done some basic research and found out that there are no major complaints against the contractor you are considering hiring, it is important that you do some more research. Having as much information as possible is important.

Look into the company to find out about their insurance, and their bonds. You should know how much they have of both of these. If you would have to make a claim on damages, it is important that you know what you have to work with.

Once you have decided that they may be a good option, it is time to speak with the contractor in person. You need to ask them serious questions. Find out about materials they will be using and see if they will allow you to help make the decision for which type of materials are used. You should also find out what they will do with their construction waste. Knowing what they will do to actually be green is very important.

Once you find a company that is using enough green techniques, ask them if they can give you some references. You can get references from past customers, as well as from green organizations that they may be affiliated with. If they are a good company, they will not worry about giving you any information that they have available to you since they have nothing to hide about their business and its practices.
