When you rent a condo, there are certain things that you need to ask yourself about living there. One of the main concerns that will come up is whether or not you are able to do renovations on those units. If you have been thinking about making renovations on a unit that you are living in and you want to know more about whether or not that is allowed, there are several ways that you can find out. Though you might have to do a little research to determine whether or not it is allowed, it will be worth it to stay out of trouble just in case it turns out that it is not allowed after all.

How to Research Rules

The first place that you can look is in the rental agreement that you have. Alternatively, if you purchased the condo and you do not want to do something that is prohibited by the condo association, you can look at the packet that should have accompanied your mortgage payments when you purchased the unit. Either way, you should be able to find a section on renovations to the outdoor area of the unit. Here, you can learn more about whether or not it is allowed for you to do renovations on the interior or the exterior of your home, and check on how much the project will cost. This is probably the best place for you to look.

This is because all of the rules and regulations of the complex should be included in that packet of papers. This will not just include items about renovations, but items about noise limits, parking restrictions and any other guidelines that will come along with living in the area that you are living in. Condo communities are very restrictive in what they allow because the living quarters are so close. This being the case, the community leaders have to make sure that everything is up to code and will be alright with all of the other tenants of the area. One of those things just happens to be renovations. However, if you do not have a packet for your condo or cannot find anything about it in the rental agreement, you can still find out whether or not this is something that you are able to do by pursuing a different way of learning the rules and restrictions on renovations.

You can also inquire by speaking with a member of the condo association. You can do this by going to anyone in the area that is on that board and asking them if this is allowed. Normally, these individuals have a cursory knowledge of what kinds of things are and are not allowed. They can often answer your questions with ease if you cannot find the information anywhere else.

You might have a lot of questions about renovations in your complex. Can I add outdoor ceiling fans to my unit? Can I break out a wall and make a larger balcony? Can I add a fireplace? All of these things will be determined by whether or not it is allowed for you to make renovations on the complex that you have. If you find that you cannot make renovations on the complex that is fine. Though it might be frustrating, it is something that you will not be able to fight because the rules are very strict for this kind of community. However, depending on the community, you might find that renovations are actually encouraged by the board so that the value of the properties is increased.
